S-Club Session Volunteers
The group is split into three parts; a session based on the smiLE approach, a skills session focussing on communication, relationships, community and identity, and finally a social club. The groups will teach our children and young people skills including:
• Becoming actively responsible for their own communication and learning
• ways to prevent or repair communication breakdown in face-to-face situations
• a range of strategies to ensure they communicate their message
• to work with their peers in a group and be respectful
• socially appropriate behaviours
We are looking for volunteers to help our staff deliver this programme. Volunteering in S-Club sessions can be varied and you may be asked to support a session to help the smooth delivery of the content to the young people, or it may be that you are needed for role-play in the smiLE therapy session or simply to ‘hang-out’ during the social club where our children and young people will be putting their learnt knowledge and skills into practice. The position will require you to interact closely with young people with Down’s syndrome, teaching staff and speech therapists.
21 Together highly values staff professional development, so the role will come with training and access to expert knowledge/experience. We are looking for people with an excellent rapport with young people, who can adjust their social communication style according to the needs of the young person. This position would suit an energetic individual with a can-do attitude and a love for learning new skills.
Time commitment:
S-Club Sessions will run in blocks of 10 sessions on a Saturday from 9:00-15:30.
We would ask that any new volunteers are able to support for at least 5 of the sessions in the block, to allow consistency for the children and young people.
Upcoming term: Saturday 25th January - Saturday 29th March inclusive
Remuneration
The role of a volunteer is a voluntary position and is therefore not remunerated. However, reasonable expenses for travel, training and prior approved expenses incurred in carrying out duties may be claimed.
