Overview and Purpose
This two-part course is designed to provide insights and discussions into toilet training, including issues commonly associated with Down’s syndrome.
The first session is a reminder of healthy bladder and bowel management; discussing their function, control and issues, focussing on the impact constipation and daytime bladder problems have on the child’s ability to achieve continence. An opportunity to test your knowledge and to get up to date on the latest treatments, with opportunities for Q&A.
The second session looks at the normal acquisition of bowel and bladder control, and the obstacles that may arise. Using the tools available on the ERIC website, we will explore the importance of assessment of bladder and bowel health and of readiness for toilet training, and how to apply what we learn to design individual toileting programmes. Including a look at case studies and a further opportunity for Q&A.
By the end of the course you should be familiar with the normal acquisition of bowel and bladder control, be clear about what assessment/investigations are appropriate and have an increased confidence in toilet training and continence management.
