Cost: Parent/Carers £20, Professionals £45. Prices are per person.

Overview and Purpose:
This course is aimed at staff, professionals and parents, looking at how to teach children & young people with Down’s syndrome about their bodies, keeping safe, privacy, social boundaries and self-help skills.
SESSION ONE
Ice breaker, introductions and group rules.
The importance on SRE for people with Down’s syndrome
Public and private body parts, language, actions, places, functions. Learning the rules
Touch – different types, self/other.
Healthy sexual behaviours
SESSION TWO
Puberty for boys, girls and Down syndrome, managing changes in your body, dignity.
Learning about each other
Boys about girls and girls about boys
Masturbation
Personal hygiene and self-help skills
SESSION THREE
Signs for SRE
Social Skills:
Feelings, Self-Image and self-esteem. Learning to recognise and manage basic feelings. Importance of feelings in developing self-image, friendships and relationships. Feelings of self and others
Answering difficult questions
Interpersonal boundary training –appropriate greetings
SESSION FOUR
Friendships. The importance of friendships – where do we get our information from/when
Safeguarding – becoming your own protector
Safety in the community – feeling safe in the community
Assertiveness training, saying no/understanding no.
Exploitation and abuse – early warning signs – what your body tells you
Abuse prevention strategies
Handouts for the sessions will be provided, however, to purchase a memory stick from the trainer with a programme and additional resources on this topic please click here.
