Meeting the Learning Needs of Children and Young People with Down’s Syndrome
This course is open to Kent-based parents, carers and professionals supporting children with Down’s syndrome. It is vital to any school staff newly supporting a child/young person with Down’s syndrome.

This training will be split into two parts. Part one consists of online learning which will be sent to you to watch at home before attending and part two is the in-person training session.
Video: Learning Profile, Inclusion and Support - The video focuses on the key elements of the specific learning profile, how you can best support progress, dispel some myths and give you strategies and resource ideas, based on research and good practice, to ensure you can meet their individual learning needs. We also consider the role of the support assistant and what effective inclusion looks like. (The video will be circulated to you to watch at home, before attending the session.)
Video: Accessing the Curriculum - “An essential feature of establishing an inclusive classroom is, to begin with, the assumption that all learners can learn” (Toson et al 2012). In this video, we explore the importance of good inclusive practice, including how to scaffold pupils’ access to the curriculum, ideas for and methods of differentiation, and we will look at removing barriers to learning.
Both video modules must be accessed at each delegate’s own convenience, prior to attending the in person training on Wed 9 October 2024. Access will be provided from Monday 2 September 2024 via email.
In-person session - Will focus on teaching the child to read, developing literacy skills and access to the curriculum. Teaching Reading (early stages), reading for meaning, and recommended schemes and resources. Supporting access to the curriculum within good inclusive practice. For more able readers, it will discuss developing further reading and decoding skills, reading comprehension and how to differentiate pupils’ access to the curriculum appropriately.
Some parts of the in-person session will be split into two groups, depending on the level of the reader you are supporting.
This training will enable you to teach and support pupils with Down’s syndrome more effectively.
