Date & Time for Live Twilight Sessions: Wednesday 23rd September and Thursday 1st October 2020 between 4:00-6:00pm. Each session will have new content so attendees should attend both.

Cost: Parent/Carers £25, Professionals £120. Prices are per person.

Overview and Purpose:

This course is aimed at staff, professionals and parents who have not had any previous training and whose children or pupils are able to read at above beginner level. This course will include an emphasis on developing reading comprehension and how to differentiate pupils’ access to the curriculum appropriately. This session will enable you to teach and support pupils with Down syndrome more effectively. It will cover the key elements of the specific learning profile, how you can best support progress, dispel some myths and give you strategies and resource ideas, based on research and good practice, to ensure you can meet their individual learning needs. We will also consider the role of the support assistant and what effective inclusion looks like.

Topic areas to be covered:

  • Learning profile

  • Inclusion & Support (role of the TA)

  • Teaching Reading (developing stage) which will include phonics, spelling and reading comprehension

  • Strategies for Differentiation - How and what to consider 

AIMS/OUTCOMES:

By the end of this session you will…

  • understand the impact of having Down syndrome

  • be aware of the typical learning profile of pupils with Down syndrome

  • be able to further develop reading and comprehension skills 

  • be able to identify how you can best support progress

  • be able to recognise what teaching strategies will work best 

  • be able to demonstrate good inclusive practice and differentiate appropriately

Twilight Sessions:

The twilight sessions will focus on ‘reading’ (with the emphasis on reading, spelling and comprehension and ‘differentiation’).

  • The first twilight session will include a Q&A session at the beginning following on from the learning profile and inclusion online training you will have completed previously.

  • The second twilight session will include a Q&A session at the end to follow up on any reading and differentiation queries.
